The Skinny: Billy Durney, the chef and operator behind beloved Brooklyn bistro Red Hook Tavern (and Hometown BBQ) is going out east, with plans to debut Sag Harbor Tavern in time for Memorial Day Weekend.
The Vibe: The 100-seat indoor/outdoor restaurant (plus eight-seat bar) housed inside the town’s American Legion building, was previously occupied by the short-lived Sag Harbor Kitchen (Rocco, Sag hardly knew you). The revamped space features an early 1900s aesthetic, with vintage lighting fixtures, tufted banquettes, and retro floral wallpaper, a look Durney recently teased on Instagram (above).
The Food & Drink: Will Red Hook Tavern’s beloved dry aged cheeseburger make it out east? It will, indeed. Expect a classic American-style menu similar to Red Hook Tavern, but with greater focus on seafood, raw, woodfired, and in a rock shrimp squid ink tagliatelle. Red Hook Tavern has a sneakily epic wine list featuring some very old and rare bottles, and the Sag location will offer the same, from 1970s Cali Cab to top-notch vintage Champagne.
The Verdict: Sag Harbor Tavern will house some of the most coveted seats in the Hamptons for summer 2024. –Kat Odell
