GOODS & SERVICES • FOUND Service
I’d been ambiently aware of the existence of Davocadoguy for a little while — fresh avocado delivery to your apartment, one of those only-in-New-York sort of things you hear about through word of mouth or perhaps a FOUND Routine — but had never tried the service. Last month, when temperatures dropped and the quality of avocados at our local supermarket declined in lockstep, I finally decided to give it a go. I placed my order on a Monday, and on Wednesday, a tidy brown paper bag holding five avocados sat on my doorstep.
Our first impression was nothing short of astounded. These were gorgeous, ripe and near-ripe fruits (indeed, levels of avocado ripeness can be specified to your tastes and aging needs) that sliced as perfectly as any avocado I’ve ever handled. My wife aptly described the difference between these specimens and our supermarket’s avocados as like that between summer and winter tomatoes.
An order of five avocados runs $13.80, just below the service’s $14 minimum for free delivery. They’ll round that up, or you can add in a lemon or lime (the two other fruits on offer). At our house, Davocadoguy now arrives weekly, keeping us and our two avocado-crazed little girls well nourished, even as the chill winds blow. –Lockhart Steele
