Nine Orchard on the Lower East Side
As a Charleston, SC, resident who visits New York often, my go-to NYC hotel has been The Bowery. But a recent trip gave me a one-night opportunity to check out a new hotel that has been top of mind: Nine Orchard.
The building, a former bank on the corner of Orchard and Canal in the Lower East Side, sits right on the edge of Dimes Square and Chinatown. It was years ago rumored to be a future ACE Hotel. That plan never materialized.
Nine Orchard opened last summer with a big boost from Ignacio Mattos (Estela, Altro Paradiso, Lodi), whose version of a hotel restaurant, Corner Bar, was a rave-reviewed tight table from the jump. Mattos's fine dining play, Amado Grill, is checking into Nine Orchard soon.
The interiors are a subtle play on mid-Atlantic luxury, less the fusty chintz you'd find it deployed uptown, with a dash of au currant downtown hipsterism as befits the fashion-heavy crowd packing the place. The rooms are sumptuous, modish, smart, soothing. There's a clear stiching of top-flight choices among the fine-point details — much of the furniture is BDDW.
I took my breakfast in the lobby bar (called Swan Room, above) in the morning, where coffee and croissants are provided for overnight guests. (Breakfast was available in Corner Bar.) And I love Nine Orchard’s proximity to some of my favorite NYC spots (Cervo’s, Scarr’s Pizza, Metrograph, among others).
The Verdict: FOUND. They nailed it. –Brooks Reitz,

GETAWAYS • Friday Routine
Fred Wilson, Partner, Union Square Ventures
Neighborhood you live in: Greenwich Village
Sites: AVC, USV
It’s Friday afternoon, how are you rolling into the weekend?
I usually work from my wife Joanne's office in the West Village on Fridays. And I usually wander over to the bar at Anton's for a late lunch and a Rothaus Pilsner (above). Then I like to head back for a quick nap before my afternoon meetings. I like to end the work week in style. ;)
Any restaurant plans this weekend?
We're trying the new Golden Swan in the former Spotted Pig space on W. 11th. We'll see how that goes. It will be hard to beat its former tenant in terms of food, drink, and unfortunately, notoriety.
How about a little leisure or culture?
It's all MSG, all the time, right now. Playoff basketball is back in NYC and that's about the best thing about 2023 so far.
Do you get away anywhere regularly for the weekend?
Amagansett. A few nights there is the ultimate head-fixer. We like to drive out mid/late-Friday morning and drive back mid-Sunday morning.
What was your last great vacation?
We did a long weekend with friends in Mexico City to attend a Bright Moments NFT art event. We ate at Máximo Bistrot, which was amazing, and we visited Barragán’s Casa Pedregal and then ate lunch at Tetetlán, the great spot next door. We also had lunch at Contramar, which we always do. The fish with the warm tacos never fails to please.
